Gems are the premium currency in The Settlers Online. This guide shows how to get them for free and use them optimally.
There are numerous ways to get gems for free:

The best investment should provide long-term benefit. Recommended priorities:

Best long-term investment — produce gems back over time.

Event purchases
Time-limited items with high value (excluding buildings, specialists).

Building licences
More room for production buildings = higher throughput.

Other
Additional generals, geologist slots, premium days as needed.
Tip: Do NOT spend gems on resource packs or speedups — the value you get is too low.
